Surviving a Summer Pregnancy

When I was pregnant with Sophia, I was lucky enough to not have to endure a full summer of pregnancy and I joked that Anthony and I would have to work on our timing for any future pregnancies so that I wouldn't have to go through summer being pregnant. Of course, I was halfway kidding as we know all too well that the Lord is in control no matter how much planning or cycle/fertility tracking you may do. I figured I have had enough experience in our Texas humidity and summer with my second pregnancy with baby Anthony to know how to survive summer during pregnancy and wanted to share it with you guys.   1. Staying Hydrated - I mean I think this one is kind of obvious even if you are not pregnant. A lot of people and articles have their opinion on what the "right" amount of water it is you should drink. However, I read my body or more specifically watch the color of my urine. TMI, I know but seriously that is the best way to know if you are hydrated enough besides the obvious signs of dehydration. Just make sure you drink enough water that is perfect for your lifestyle and body needs. For me, it is about two to three 16 ounces of water a day with little to no exercise. If I drink caffeine or sugar drinks then I will need to drink more water to level out the sugar or caffeine or if I am overly active I will also need to up my water intake. I am a big water drinker and have experimented for years on the right amount for me which is why I have it down to a science for my body.
  2. Go Swimming - If I could live at the pool I totally would. Not only is it refreshing to be in the water but it is also great cardio AND it helps alleviate sciatic pain and takes pressure off as I personally feel weightless in the water. I love taking a pool noodle to hold me up. However, having a toddler does make it harder to get to the pool unless you have someone willing to go with you and take on baby duty so you can relax. Sophia is a total fish now and loves to run back and forth between the kiddie pool and the adult pool so I definitely needed another set of hands with me. Also, don't forget to pack water and snacks for yourself and the kiddos to munch on during break time as you can still get dehydrated even if you are in water. The summer sun is no joke.
  3. Clothing - As much as we want to look cute while being pregnant, wearing the right fabric and fit of maternity clothing is key to staying cool. There are pregnancy bottoms that have the under the belly fit but I personally don't like that fit, I prefer over the belly bottoms therefore the tops I wear must be super lightweight.
  4. Run Errands in the Evening or Early Morning - It is typically cooler in the mornings and evenings instead of the middle of the day therefore try to run errands when it is coolest. I am not a morning person and like to start my day off slow so I typically save my errands for the end of the day when possible but that could also be witching hour if you have young kids that don’t nap and morning errand may be your best option.
  5. Stay Indoors - When possible, just stay indoors. There is nothing to feel guilty about relaxing in the cool AC during the summer months. Your body is doing overtime growing another human being so you have a reason to take it easy and relax inside. Take advantage because once that little one is here and running around, it's harder to find that time to sit and relax whether it is summer or not.
